No plug-in hybrids or full EVs: Volkswagen’s second-generation T-Roc is a careful evolution of the first, as the German car maker decides not tamper with a formula that has already netted them over two million sales
Volkswagen has released a second-generation T-Roc, with familiar design cues to those who loved the original.
And there are plenty who did, with over two million sold worldwide.
Volkswagen says the new T-Roc has been developed from scratch, with a new interior whose centrepiece is a 33 cm infotainment screen with background lighting, more room, and new tech.
Up front are slim LED headlights that mark out that this is a new model, with matrix headlights available as an option. Round the back the theme continues with a narrow light strip and the VW logo at the centre.
Volkswagen tends to do well with its interiors and the T-Roc is no exception, with soft surfaces and premium materials. There is an optional head-up display. Overall length is up 12 cm, which aids interior space, and boot volume is up 30 ℓ to 475 ℓ.
New tech includes Travel Assist, which supports automatic lane changes and reacts to speed limits, and Park Assist Pro, which can do automatic parking over 50 m, with smartphone control to take the car in and out of parking spaces.
Two 1·5 48 V mild hybrids developing 116 PS and 150 PS (85 kW and 110 kW respectively) are the base power units, with a T-Roc R to come. All are front-wheel drive, with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. No mention of full or plug-in hybrids or full EVs were made in the release.
Six colours are available. European models are made at the Palmela, Portugal plant.
